Why visit Baiona?

Walls, a caravel and an ocean full of islands

Baiona is one of the most attractive small towns on the Galician coast: a granite old quarter and a yacht harbour tucked behind a walled headland, at the point where the sheltered Ría de Vigo meets the open Atlantic.

On 1 March 1493 the caravel La Pinta sailed in here with the first news of Columbus’s voyage, and the town has been telling the story ever since. Today you come for the rampart walk, seafood and Albariño in the old lanes, a run of beaches, and day trips that are among the best in Spain’s north-west — above all the boat to the Cíes Islands. This guide shows you how to fit it together, and how to plan around the Atlantic weather.

Visiting Baiona: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is Baiona worth visiting?

Yes. It combines a walled headland, a handsome old town, good beaches and excellent seafood in a place small enough to walk, and it is the closest mainland harbour to the Cíes Islands. You can compare the best tours here.

How do you get to Baiona?

Fly to Vigo (about 35 km away) or Porto (around an hour and a half by road), then continue by car or by bus via Vigo. Baiona has no railway station. See our getting here guide.

How many days do I need in Baiona?

Two to three nights is ideal: one day for the fortress, the old town and a beach, one for the Cíes Islands, and one for the coast road to Oia and A Guarda or a day in Vigo.

Does it rain a lot in Baiona?

From October to April, yes — this is the green Atlantic corner of Spain. Summers are much drier and pleasantly warm rather than hot. Read our best time to visit guide.

Should I book the Cíes Islands in advance?

In July and August, definitely. Visitor numbers are capped, a free authorisation from the Xunta de Galicia is required in season, and weekend boats sell out. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
