Drive south-west out of Baiona and within ten minutes the sheltered ría is behind you. From Cabo Silleiro to A Guarda the coast runs almost dead straight for some thirty kilometres, with nothing between you and America: granite shelves, white water and the steep green wall of the Serra da Groba rising directly behind the road.
It is one of the emptiest stretches of the Galician shore and one of the most memorable — the route of the coastal Camino, of percebeiros who pick goose barnacles from the surf line, and of herds of semi-wild horses on the hills above.
Top things to do: Cabo Silleiro & Oia
Stop at the Cabo Silleiro lighthouse
The red-and-white lighthouse stands on the hillside about 6 km from Baiona, above the remains of 20th-century coastal gun batteries. The view north takes in the Cíes Islands and the mouth of the ría; the view west is pure ocean. Come for sunset.
Visit the monastery of Oia
The Real Mosteiro de Santa María de Oia was founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century and stands right on the shore of a tiny fishing cove — a very rare setting for the order. It is privately owned; guided visits are offered at set times, so check before you go.
Look for wild horses in the Serra da Groba
Narrow roads climb from Baiona and Oia onto the ridge, where herds of small, tough Galician horses roam free for most of the year. In late spring and early summer they are rounded up at traditional curros to be counted, clipped and marked — rough, dusty village festivals whose dates are set each year.
Walk or cycle a stretch of the coast
A path and cycle lane follow the road for much of the way and form part of the Camino Portugués da Costa. Even an hour on foot from Oia gives you the feel of it.

How to get to Cabo Silleiro & Oia
- Take the PO-552 coast road from Baiona towards A Guarda. Cabo Silleiro is about 6 km away and Oia about 18 km — around 25 minutes’ drive without stops. Buses between Baiona and A Guarda are infrequent, so a car, a bike or an e-bike tour is the practical choice.
- The mountain roads into the Serra da Groba are narrow and often misty; drive slowly and watch for animals on the road.
Insider tips
- This coast is exposed: never turn your back on the sea on the rocks, and do not swim outside the few sheltered coves.
- Carry a windproof jacket even in August.
- Petrol stations and cafés are sparse between Baiona and Oia; fill up first.
- Keep your distance from the horses — they are not tame — and never feed them.
